Description:

Pair of Scott's US #11a 3-cent tied to cover with single strike of SAN FRANCISCO CAL cds paying the single rate for over 3,000 miles domestic. Addressed to Messrs North & Savage of Middletown CT - an established firearms manufacturing company. Written across the top and over the left stamp is "Lieut E. B. Savage" On the reverse of the letter sheet is written "Lieut E. B. Savage / 24th Regt C V / Banks Expedition / Baton Rouge LA" Letter dated 1854 and concerns request for six of the North & Savage Patent rifles. The manuscript additions on front and the address on reverse were added in 1862, 1LT Edward Bowman Savage having been commissioned in the 24th Regiment of Connecticut Volunteers in 1862, serving for 1 year to 1863.
