Description:

Scott's US U-27 3-cent red on buff used during the brief period of the founding of the Confederate States of America and the prohibition of US stamp use in May of 1861. Single balloon cds for Holly Springs MISS with year block inserted upside down. Addressed to William E. Smith, a lawyer in Albany GA who would later service in the Confederate Congress from the 4th GA district. No back stamps. Mississippi seceded January 9 1861, Georgia on January 19, 1861 and both were accepted into the Confederacy on February 4, 1861.
