Description:

Soldier's Letter from Training Camp. 1c green pair (#498) tied by "San Diego Cal. Oct. 8 1917" machine cancel to Warren, Pa., written on YMCA stationery with flag. Interesting four page letter written by recruit in Marine Barracks in San Diego.

Excerpt from letter dated Sept. 8 1917:
"I am writing this in the Army Y.M.C.A. They have a big tent here for the enlisted men and have all kinds of reading material, games and victorola and piano and have movies at night. They furnish writing paper to the men, it is a fine place. They don't care what you do except to swear and tear down the tent, they are verboten. We have heard rumors that we are going to Cuba the middle of the month but I wont believe it till we go. An army camp is the worst place in the world for rumors excepting the ladies and society."
