Postmark commemorates 100th anniversary of the Battle of Lake Erie, sometimes called the Battle of Put-in-Bay, fought on 10 September 1813 in Lake Erie off the coast of Ohio during the War of 1812. Nine vessels of the United States Navy defeated and captured six vessels of the Royal Navy. After the battle Oliver Hazard Perry wrote his now famous message to Major General William Henry Harrison, scrawled in pencil on the back of an old piece of paper:
"Dear General:
We have met the enemy and they are ours. Two ships, two brigs, one schooner and one sloop.
Yours with great respect and esteem,
O.H. Perry"
