Description:

Haiti, 1797 ship letter to Philadelphia via Providence, Rhode Island. Folded letter datelined "Jacmel South Side Hispanola Nov 14 1797", manuscript "Sh. 24" rate and "Capt. Spangs" endorsement. "Providence" 31 x 4mm straight line postmark with manuscript "Dec 27" (1797). Jacmel was occupied by the mulatto rebel general André Rigaud from Dec. 1794 to July 1802, no postmarks were used in this period. Contents have to do with a ship cargo of molasses. Docketing: "Jaquemel Nov. 14 1797 John Inlay"

Act of 1792, zone rate for 250 to 350 miles = 20 cents, plus 4 cents ship fee, when delivered at port of arrival by private ship = 24 cents total postage.
